OUR HISTORY

Hotel La Quinta Roja

In 2001 we opened the doors of Hotel La Quinta Roja, after several years of arduous restoration work in which we managed to conserve 80% of the original woodwork of the patio and ceilings, the stone staircase from the early 17th century and the windows of the main façade.

We were bringing back to life one of the most important buildings in Garachico, the Casa Palacio de los Marqueses de la Quinta Roja, direct descendants of the founder of the town and port of Garachico, the Genoese banker Cristóbal Ponte. This was a great responsibility for my father, José Moriana Santisteban, a distinguished Garachiquense.

From the beginning we felt that La Quinta Roja had to be much more than a cosy hotel with a lot of history. We wanted to share with our guests our natural way of life, making them feel at home, always being at their disposal when they needed us, and passing on to them our passion for nature, history, culture and the gastronomy of our village and the island.

More than twenty years later, the whole La Quinta Roja family continues to welcome our guests with a smile, and we are thrilled when they tell us when we say goodbye that they are already looking forward to coming back.

A COMMON HISTORY

La Quinta Roja and Garachico

Archive of historical photography of the Canary Islands. Cabildo de Gran Canaria/Fedac.

The history of La Quinta Roja and the Villa and Port of Garachico have a common link, the Ponte family.

Don Cristóbal Ponte y Llarena, the first Marquis of La Quinta Roja, was a direct descendant of Don Cristóbal Ponte, the Genoese banker who founded this illustrious Villa in 1496.

Almost two centuries later, in 1689, the Marquis of La Quinta Roja ordered the construction of this Palace House, which has become one of the exponents of Canarian Baroque domestic architecture.

The Casa Palacio del Marqués de La Quinta Roja occupies a prominent place in the town of Garachico, opposite the Old Convent of San Francisco, the Town Hall and the Casa de Piedra cultural centre, the former home of the Counts of La Gomera, and next to the Plaza de la Libertad and the Church of Santa Ana.

A house that has lived many lives: palace of illustrious families, temporary convent, music school, municipal buildings… Many stories contained within these centenary walls that today welcome our guests.

Centuries after its construction, La Quinta Roja continues to witness the daily life of its inhabitants and visitors, its celebrations and festivities, and its vibrant cultural life, which we enjoy from this privileged vantage point in the heart of Garachico.
