THE ENVIRONMENT

Garachico and Isla Baja

La Villa y Puerto de Garachico (The Town and Port of Garachico) is situated on the north-west coast of Tenerife in the region known as Isla Baja, which covers the municipalities of Buenavista del Norte, Los Silos, El Tanque and Garachico.

A unique spot on the island of Tenerife, where its villages still conserve the feeling of yesteryear and nature invites you to explore at your leisure.

Travelling through Garachico means discovering the treasures of one of the most emblematic and best-preserved historic centres in the Canary Islands at a relaxing pace. Palace-houses, convents, churches and a castle all speak of the splendour of the 16th and 17th centuries, when this port was the economic hub of the island.

But there's so much more to explore in Garachico and its home region. Natural pools, walking paths, cliffs, volcanoes, country houses frozen in time, laurel forests and charming villages will reveal this part of the island with a rhythm all its own.

Hiking up the volcano at Arenas Negras, watching the sunset at Punta de Teno, descending the cliff at Masca, strolling through Buenavista or Los Silos, enjoying ancestral traditions in Teno Alto, savouring fresh fish next to the sea or walking amongst banana plantations will all be part of your itinerary when you visit us.

One step from history

Our hotel is part of Garachico’s history. You only have to step outside to begin your journey to sites that let you travel through time, like the ex-Convent of San Francisco or the Casa de Piedra.

In the Plaza de la Libertad, you’ll be able to take in the local atmosphere before visiting the Parish Church of Santa Ana, which houses valuable artefacts of local artistic and religious heritage.

The Puerta de Tierra and San Miguel Castle will transport you to back to before the eruption of the Trevejos volcano transformed Garachico’s orography and economy. Lava tongues met the sea to create the natural pools of El Caletón, which has become one of its main attractions today.

Walking down the avenue along the sea, we can view the iconic Roque de Garachico as we make our way to the ex-Convent of Santo Domingo, with its beautiful façade adorned with seven Portuguese-style balconies.

The patron saint of Garachico, San Roque, awaits us in his chapel, which is filled with colour every 16th of August during the pilgrimage held in his name.

Authentic Flavours

The economy of Garachico and Isla Baja is still very connected to the land, as in times gone by. Only the crops have changed. From sugar cane and wine, which were, in the past, exported to Europe and America via the port, to the banana and tropical fruit plantations that blanket the land closest to the coast in green.

At the weekend, you can visit the farmer’s markets held throughout the region, like the one that takes place Sunday mornings in the Plaza de la Libertad in Garachico. You can buy fruit, vegetables, traditional sweets, artisanal cheeses and honey, directly from the producers.

Just a few steps from the sea, you can never go wrong with fresh fish on local tables. Enjoy it at some of our favourite restaurants: Silogía, Arístides (Garachico) or Ribamar (Las Cruces).

Culture and Traditions

In Garachico and Isla Baja, you’ll enjoy a full cultural offering throughout the year: film, music, theatre, dance and story festivals fill the calendar with interesting options for all audiences.

Tradition is alive and well in this region, from Holy Week and the Pilgrimage of San Roque in Garachico to the La Librea festivities or the Día de la Trilla in the neighbourhood of San José de los Partidos in El Tanque, which pays homage to traditional grain collection processes.

Buenavista del Norte boasts patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios and, in Los Silos, the festival for San Antonio Abad, which sees ranchers gather from across the island.
